The galea was a helmet that the Romans wore. Centauris wore them, gladiators wore them and Roman soldiers wore them. The galea changed it's appearance over the course of the Roman Empire and were originally influenced by the Etruscans who wore the Nasua type of helmet. They were later influenced by the Gauls, who are thought to be the people who introduced chain mail to the Romans. Most galeas used by Roman legionaries had a crest holder that was used only for parades, not battle.
